The road was built by Colonel George Stoneman, commander of the army troops in Arizona. By using an old Indian trail, the road went north of Pinnacle Peak, south of what is now the Carefree Airpport and on to the north flank of Black Mountain in Cave Creek. The road then continued on north along the creek to another Indian trail that went to Apache Springs and Roger Springs in the low mountains between Cave Creek and New River. The road leading out of Cave Creek was soon changed to where the old New River Road is now, as it was easier going with wagons than the original steeper road a bit further north. It remained the major wagon route between the two forts for nearly twenty years.
